Are We Good or Bad in Nature: Differentiating Brain and Soul

As we observe our behaviours in daily circumstances, we ask ourselves: Are we good or bad by nature?
In this article, we will delve deeper into this topic and differentiate the mind from the soul.

In psychology, we identify our two conflicting sides as implicit (unconscious) and explicit (conscious) attitudes. Our explicit attitudes represent what we want to think, feel, and how we want to act—typically in a positive way. However, our implicit attitudes often suggest otherwise, leading us to perform undesirable acts involuntarily. In this case, are we truly bad?

The Power of Environmental Influence

Imagine you currently have a strong desire to help others in need, regardless of your initial impression of them. The thought of serving others makes you feel joyful, needed, and like a good person. However, when you encounter them, their conduct somehow create feelings of apathy in you. Your motivation and confidence drop to zero. You might doubt that you will ever act as you desire.

Don't worry; this is common—far more common than you think, as there're other environment factors that could influence our mood and desires. Asking ourselves some questions can help us understand more about our motive and reflect on our conflicting thoughts: Was something stopping us internally? What were our surroundings like? Are we motivated to try again? I like to differentiate between the brain and soul by highlighting their perspectives on life in the context of environment.

What does the brain do?

The brain is the mechanism that allows us to interpret and interact with our surroundings. It creates perceptions, thoughts, and ideas that enable us to react to environmental stimuli. With its tendency to respond immediately to our social environment, there's limited time to distinguish between what's good or bad, which in turn shapes our thinking. These thoughts often prompt us to look inward in an effort to resolve them. In this way, the brain can be seen as a guide that leads us toward self-reflection—and ultimately, toward the soul.

What is the Soul?

The soul is often described as the spiritual essence of a being that fosters deeper connections with others. While the soul may be viewed as a belief that helps to explain the origin of human existence, we can observe distinct behavioural differences between those who are awakened and those who have yet to. Awakening enables us to see the world beyond its limits and empower us to grow, leading us to enlightenment.  In this way, the purity of our soul guides us to act with greater clarity and purpose in our daily lives.

Differing Interpretation

As we’re exposed to social influences in our environment, our brains generate both positive and negative thoughts about ourselves and others. That’s the nature of the brain—it responds to external stimuli by creating thoughts. However, when you discover the soul within, you may begin to experience a third-person perspective, gaining expanded awareness of the world around you. This heightened awareness allows deeper reflection, encouraging more positive thinking and behaviour.

In our everyday lives, we constantly encounter a range of stimuli and sensations that can lead to frustration and negative thoughts. In these moments, it helps to take a step back and reconnect with our inner self. Remind yourself that all humans can learn to be altruistic with intention and willpower, be caring and loving when their surroundings allow. Once you reach that awareness, you can then be in better control of your surroundings.

How can we see with our soul?

Like any skill, connecting with our inner selves takes time and consistent effort. We can practice mindfulness to train the mind to be at ease, filtering out external distractions that prevent us from seeing ourselves in our purest form. When you choose to view the world in a positive light—believing that people are inherently kind—your can start to anticipate new changes from your environment.
