Nagomi: Finding Our Inner Peace

Finding our inner peace

Some questions to consider before we dive right into the conversation:

1. What exactly is inner peace?

2. Does it feel the same for everyone?

3. Does it affect your life in any way? If so, how?

So, what exactly in inner peace?

Definition: Inner peace is often defined as experiencing a deep state of calmness, empathy and fulfilment, despite the environment being otherwise. It involves a process that requires continual patience, unwavering determination and strong endurance. With this state of mind, one aims not to eradicate stress and challenges, but navigating them with a clear and peaceful mind.

When can I use it and how is it beneficial?

The state of inner peace can be activated as long as we allow it. This intangible yet powerful state of mind can help us in all sorts of situations—whether we are feeling doubtful, stressed, dejected or even relaxed—naturally enhancing the experience without the need to escape reality. This aligns with our earlier definition: facing reality calmly and transparently.

My own personal experience: A brief start

To help us get started, I will provide my own personal experience when I first acquired this internal, amazing state of mind. As a 17 year old, I have never ventured into the natural environments alone without my parents. But that time, the strong desire to become less reliant and more independent fuelled me with motivation to explore nature on my own.

Stage 1: In pace with the surroundings

As the sight of trees filled my peripheral vision, I trekked through the forest, following the swaying movement of the leaves. Although the soreness of my muscles increase gradually, the apparent harmony between me and the magnificent trees shielded the sensation. My attention was drawn entirely into the beauty of the damp nature.

Stage 2: Connecting with the sights and sounds

When I was with my family, my attention were partially tied to their experience. As a result, I never had the chance to release my spirit and roam freely. This time, however, I cleared my mind and made full use of the 5 sensations to feel the surroundings. I had to say, the world is truly filled with a myriad of alluring fauna and flora, harmonizing sounds into a melodious piece. It was simply amazing.

Stage 3: Together, one as a whole

I've reached my final stage, and graduation after that. As I continued to embrace myself in this quiet, peaceful environment, I felt as if I gained infinite strength in a timeless environment. Strangely, clear thoughts that I had not initiated flowed in, as I greet them one by one effortlessly. Ironically, I formed secure connection with the earth, yet having no bonds with anyone.

This is when I knew: I achieved Nagomi.

What can we conclude? + Tips

From my experience, we can see that acquisition happened unintentionally. It does not require extensive effort to connect with our environment. Everything goes on naturally, unconsciously and unintentionally. Let us take a look at some tips that can help you achieve this easily.

Tip #1: Knowing Its Purpose

Firstly, we have to know its purpose. Inner peace although is unnecessary, but it can help everyone in all aspects in life. It helps us to face our circumstances more easily, reduces stress and negativity, and most desirably— to resolve the situation with a calm mind. It can definitely be beneficial for our daily lives, contributes to our happiness and reduce the risk of getting stress-related illnesses such as hypertension, heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Hence, I largely recommended anyone to invest effort to achieve this mental state.

Tip #2: Embrace Your Individuality

Secondly, it is best to engage in activities we are comfortable with. It could be reading, working, eating (healthily), anything. It is always best to avoid doing pursuits that make us regret, even if it boost our self esteem temporarily. Also, doing what the majority enjoys may not necessarily benefit us, due to individuality and physical constraints; strolling in the park, for example. Therefore, it’s important to identify activities that suit us personally and find genuine interest in them.

Tip #3: No Distractions

Last but not least, a clear mind with minimal environment distractions are the optimal factors that can help us in achieving our first inner peace. When we are engaging in the pursuit, we should stick to the mindset that we enjoy this. Reduce any contradictions imposed by our fluctuating mood during the process. Controlling mood and negative thoughts are essential for leaving a good impression. This will help us to focus on the experience entirely. Then, slowly appreciate the stimuli and look up at the sky (something bonus that helped me feel in terms with the world. But yes, optional)
